We Made It!

Our family has reached a new record:

366 days in the same apartment!

So far in our marriage, we have moved every summer. Here is a look at our years together:

The Newlywed Era

My aunt and uncle were serving a mission and were extremely generous enough to let us stay in the unoccupied main level of their home during the first year of our marriage. The only stipulation was that we were to share half of the utility bills with my cousin who was living downstairs and take care of the yard work. We had a couple of dry spots on the lawn that we worked all year long to try to revive in hopes of showing them a glorious lawn when they returned.

The McGeorge Era

Welcome to true newlywed living! The shower knob came off in my hand the first time I turned it on. The air conditioning was a window unit that cooled off the living room through a cut out hole in the wall from the bedroom to the living room.

The Stonelake Era

We moved to paradise right before Blake was born. This second-story, TWO bedroom apartment had never been lived in and was full of light. Every time we looked at model homes for a fun date, I would say, "I love our apartment more than any of those homes!" Oh, I loved that place. We decorated a nursery and welcomed our first son.

The Lake Point Era

Robbie and the ward members single-handedly moved us into a new apartment while I was away at a Blakely Family reunion in Utah. We moved to this apartment to save two months of rent, offered to all new move-in's due to the newness of the complex. I discovered the train park and the world of mom's play groups.

Uncle Derek comes to visit

We met Kyser.

The Sondiesa Era

We were sure we needed a third bedroom in anticipation of Grace's birth and the 3-bedroom apartments were more expensive than a rental home so we moved into a home on Sondiesa Way. Ugh, ugh, ugh. Robert asked me recently if I would consider buying that home since it has recently gone up for sale. I said, "If we could replace all of the cabinets, paint the entire house on the inside, replace the counter tops in the kitchen and bathroom, lower the kitchen counter top overlooking the living room, add some windows in the kitchen, replace the tile (which was throughout the house) with soft deep carpet, change the exterior color, take off the sunroom and move it away from the house to add more light to the living room, and add a fourth bedroom." That would be a "no."

Dark, dark, dark! Though we had millions of laughs here, this house gets the "ugh" award.

The Somerfield Era

Our Sondiesa landlord wanted to move back into his house so we packed and moved last July into our current apartment. In anticipation of buying a house we decided to downsize to a two-bedroom apartment and chose the least-expensive complex in our all-time fave ward, which we've manage to stay in through the last four years. Here we are, happy and close. How long will we stay here? We'll keep you posted!

At least you guys didn't have as much stuff as we did in those 4oo something square feet apartments at McGeorge! Oh those were the times... :) I totally forgot the air conditioning problem... At least it was cheap and we lived right on campus, right? :)

Wow! It is making me tired just thinking about all that moving. You are a superstar Melissa! That is so great that you have all those pictures.

That is ALOT of moving!!!! I am impressed. I am glad that all of those moves have allowed you to stay in our ward!

So glad you're staying put for a little longer this time. I detest moving! Hilary is the only person I know who has moved more than you! Makes me feel boring -- after one ugh apartment (a lot worse than your ugh house), we got a house that I loved in Covington. Now we're in Utah, so we've really only had two moves. (Or three if you count the partial move from my parents' home to here. :) I'll make sure to consult with you if we move again, because you must have it down to a perfection by now!!!

Mela! I love your new wallpaper! And as much as I thought I knew how much you've moved, I had never put it together that you've moved EVERY year of your marriage! Congratulations on the first year of stationary living! So where are you going to move next month? :) It's great you were at least able to stay in the same ward.

I liked looking at all your different homes. My favorite is the one you're in now, but I even really liked the one you didn't like. Maybe I'd have to see it in person. I can't believe you've moved that much. I think that would wear me out! But I think you should move one more time...to Mesa!

Oh, I love this post. I want to copy it, even though I have come NO WHERE CLOSE to moving that many times. I think it's nice of you to give the EQ something to do...

Melissa,
I love this post. I can so relate to the whole moving thing. I might have to copy you and do this blog for us. We move 10 times within our first 4 years of marriage. (that was also moving from Ca to Utah then several cities in Utah then to Wisconsin and back to Ca into the house on Tree Swallow in Eg. That was the longest we ever lived somewhere and it was just shy of 4 years.) We've now lived here just over a year too. I think we moved right at the same time. Anyways, we are itching to get back to Sacramento. Hopefully it will only be a few short years until then. The housing Market needs to come back up. Not keeping my fingers crossed for that one. Anyways, loved it!!
